OVERVIEW
The 2009 Summer Taiko Institute (STI) is a 3-day series of hands-on taiko workshops taught by leading practitioners of the artform. This one-of-a-kind program provides rare insight into taiko technique, music, and philosophy. The program takes place in Los Angeles on August 3-5, immediately prior to the 2009 Taiko Conference.
This year’s series is facilitated by On Ensemble, one of the most respected and adventurous taiko groups in existence today. Utilizing a remarkably wide-range of instruments and a wide-range of taiko playing techniques, On Ensemble’s music is a complex mixture of influences. Modern Drummer magazine calls On Ensemble “an exciting taiko ensemble looking at new ways to apply traditional Japanese drums.” Each of the group’s four members has studied extensively in Japan and the United States with taiko legends including Kiyonari Tosha, Kenny Endo, Shasta Taiko, and Ondekoza. On Ensemble has prepared an intense program for the 2009 Summer Taiko Institute; 24 hours of lessons in three days, covering a wide range of taiko topics, from basic stance and strike technique, to musical arrangement, timing, and performance.
On Ensemble is composing a brand new taiko piece, to be debuted at STI and taught to the 25 participants! With the piece as a foundation, the program explores each step of the song cycle: from practice to performance to critical review and revision. In addition to basic form and technique training, participants learn practical tips for improving timing, musicality, and playing as a group. As the song is further polished, supplementary drills and performance concepts for refinement are explored. Along with specific techniques, rhythms, and drills, participants learn the On Ensemble members’ underlying philosophies and creative processes. STI participants come away empowered to apply the concepts to future songs. The course provides numerous take-home materials, in addition to the new piece itself, for sharing with participants’ home groups.
