HOW TO APPLY
STI is open to all players regardless of age or experience. The program is designed for motivated, curious, committed players who seek to improve their abilities and explore the art of taiko. The ideal applicant is an active learner who is ready for new and varied challenges. Non-taiko percussionists are also welcome to apply, provided the applicant’s interest in taiko is substantiated.
The application process has been simplified for 2009. Applicants must provide a Personal Statement explaining interest in the program, and how they hope the Summer Taiko Institute will impact their taiko playing. The Personal Statement should be one page or less, include the participant’s name, address, email, and phone. The Personal Statement is not meant to be an onerous writing exercise; applicants for whom English is a second language, for example, should not be deterred from applying. Although a clear, well-written Personal Statement suggests dedication and sincerity, the Statement will be evaluated on its content rather than its language.
Applicants can supplement their Personal Statement with supporting materials including a video recording (or link to online video) of a musical performance or demonstration, a resume of taiko experience, or a letter of recommendation. These materials are not required. The option to submit supporting materials is intended to empower applicants to provide additional material in support of their application.
APPLICATIONS ARE DUE FRIDAY, APRIL, 10, 2009
Results will be announced by April 24, 2009.
